Stepping out into the garage, I pulled the door closed behind me and found Dean waiting in the driver’s seat of Baylor’s work truck. When he didn’t make a move to look up through the windshield or even hop out to greet me, I knew that whatever this was between us was only hurting him. I didn’t like the shift in our relationship and certainly didn’t want to have to walk on eggshells around him. I swallowed past the lump in my throat, because I honestly didn’t know how to proceed from here. Readjusting my wool knit hat on my head, ensuring it was covering my ears, I walked towards the passenger side. After Dean had walked out I'd rushed to Eden’s bedroom and pilfered through her closet until I found her old purple parka and a pair of snow boots. Eden’s foot was a size bigger than mine, but it’d work for the situation.

When I lifted the handle on the door I didn’t know what the mood in the cab of the truck would be. What I didn’t expect was the tension to be so unsurmountable that it would really take some effort to climb up into the seat.

I stayed frozen in my seat, looking out the windshield in disbelief at all the slide offs on the road. Numerous cars were driven into embankments and even more were abandoned. Dean hadn’t even spoken a word to me since I situated myself and buckled up. He was driving carefully and I couldn’t help but think maybe he was taking extra precautions because I was with him. Just the thought that he actually might care about me sent up all kinds of red flags that I wanted nothing more than to ignore. He was nothing like my two ex-husbands, so keeping him from my overly guarded heart wasn’t fair to him or myself. I just didn’t know whether or not it was worth the chance to break down my heavily defended wall only to have him shatter my heart even more. Then there was the matter of us living in two completely different states. I released a long, drawn out sigh and laid the back of my head up against the head rest. Twenty-four hours ago I barely tolerated the guy and now what?

“You like me…” Dean spoke up, startling me from my thoughts as if he had read my mind.

Placing my elbow on the door frame, I sighed again, thinking of how I should put my emotions into words. If I even wanted to give him that much. “I’m a step up from tolerating you, I’d say I’m accepting you. Ask me again tomorrow.”

He chuckled, “I’ll hold you to that.” And just like that the tension dissipated; I was extremely thankful for the relief and the ability to take a fully cleansing breath.

Dean was right, I didn’t want to spend the remainder of our time contemplating what the next step would be or obsess about something coming afterwards. I wanted to just be with him.
